SHUTTLEBAY

The Galaxy  has 3 shuttlebays.  The Main bay is located in the saucer section at the rear of deck 5 and bays 2 and 3 are located in the Stardrive section.   The shuttlebay features its own observation deck and control tower for montering incoming and outgoing craft. In addition to the main hangar bays, there are smaller bays that branch out from it where shuttlecraft can be stored when not in use or maintenance can be preformed.

Under normal shipboard operating conditions, the doors to the shuttlebays remain closed.  They are only opened when necessary.  When opened, a forcefield is erected in place that allows craft to pass between the shuttlebay and space with ease, while still keeping the bay pressurized.

The shuttlebay is overseen by the Flight Deck controller.  It is the responsibility of the Flight Deck controller to coordinate with the Bridge Operations officer in the event of
any shuttlecraft landings or launchings.

The Galaxy carries a large compliment of shuttlecraft that can preform a variety of tasks, depending on the mission parameters.  The smallest craft in the vehicle inventory is the Type-18 Shuttlepod.  The Defender is currently equipped with nearly 30 such craft.  The Type-18 Shuttlepod carries only two occupants at most and is capable of limited warp travel.

The second most common craft in ship's inventory is the  Type-8 shuttlecraft.  The Galaxy carries 15 of these ships.  Much larger than the shuttlepod, it can carry several passengers and travel extended periods at a moderate warp speed.  This craft is also armed with two phasers.

The third type of shuttle carried aboard the Galaxy is the Type-9 Warp shuttle.  This advanced craft can carry several passengers and travel at high warp for extended periods of time.  It is also armed with two phaser emitters.

In addition to the standard compliment of shuttlepods and shuttlecraft, the Galaxy carries two (2) Danube-class runabouts.  They have been named the Cameroon, and London.  Each runabout can carry many more passengers than any shuttlecraft, although the standard crew is typically two.  Each runabout is capable of speeds up to warp 5.  In addition, each is equipped with multiple phaser arrays.  Depending on the type of mission, an upper roll bar can be attached to the ship to provide enhanced sensors for science mission, or extra weapons for defensive missions such as micro torpedoes.
